A PROUD HISTORY

Our karate club has been successfully running for many years. It is based on the karate form known as Go-Ju Ryu - a self-defence style originating from Japan.

Many styles of karate are practised in the U.K. today. However, the GoJu Ryu Academy of Karate-Do is perhaps only one of a handful of clubs that are able to trace their history and family tree from it's foundation through to the current Sensei, Tony Christian (based in the NorthWest) and is able to consider the influence each has had on the development of their style. You can read more on the Go-Ju Ryu history by clicking here.

SENSEI and INSTRUCTORS

Tony Byrne, the Sensei has over 30 years of Go-Ju Ryu experience and holds the rank of 5th dan Black Belt. He is supported by a strong team of black belt students who strive to develop the other students - irrespective of age or ability.

Grading and development

Training is held two times each week. In addition, the club has grading sessions that are held quarterly and the more senior belts attend regional training and grading sessions - usually managed by Tony Christian who is the principal teacher of Go-Ju Ryu in the United Kingdom.
